Training Program for Breath Alcohol Operators

Basic Training Program for Breath Alcohol Operators
Individuals must attend this 40-hour course in order to become licensed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to conduct evidential breath alcohol tests on approved and certified instruments. The course includes lectures discussing the theory and operation of the instrument and hands-on laboratory exercises. In order to be licensed, an individual must successfully complete a written and practical exam at the conclusion of the course. Individuals must be an active member of a Federal or District Law Enforcement Agency and certified by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in Standard Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) to attend this course.
 
Breath Alcohol Operator Recertification Course
In order to maintain a current license, operators are required to attend a 4-hour course every 2 years. The course includes a lecture discussing updates in the Breath Alcohol Program, a review of the theory and operation of the instrument, and a practical exam at the conclusion of the course. Only licensed operators who have successfully completed the Basic Training Program for Breath Alcohol Operators will be able to attend this course.
