OCME Divisions

The following seven divisions comprise the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

  • Forensic Pathology - Provides, in a timely manner, decedent external and/or external examination, documentation and analysis services to law enforcement, government agencies, interested parties and families to determine and understand the cause and manner of death. Duties performed by medical examiners.
  • Forensic Investigations - Provides information and evidence gathering and medical interpretation services to OCME, law enforcement agencies legal counsel and the community to identify decedents and determine the cause and manner of death. Duties performed by Medicolegal Investigators.
  • Communication - Receives and processes notifications of death; initializes decedent cases and obtains and documents associated data and paperwork for case file; provides assistance to families in decedent identification and serve as liaison to funeral directors. Duties Performed by Intake Assistant.
  • Mortuary Services - Provides body disposition and autopsy support services to OCME, the funeral industry and the public so they can have a body that is properly prepared for autopsy or disposition in timely manner. Duties performed by Autopsy Assistants and Forensic Photographers.
  • Laboratory Services - Provides Scientific support services - toxicology and histology -- to OCME, law enforcement agencies, legal counsel and the community so they can access timely, accurate and complete data and information. Duties performed by Forensic Toxicologist and personnel with Histology knowledge and skills.
  • Medical Records - Maintains decedent case files including autopsy reports, toxicology and other laboratory results, photographs and case correspondence; assures that all data pertaining to autopsy reports, insurance forms and proofs of death and death certificates are complete accurate and legally justified. Duties performed by Medical Records Technicians.
  • Administrative Services - Directs the operational aspects of the agency such as personnel, contracting and procurement, IT services and labor relations; as well as financial properly, fleets and risk management. Duties performed by various Administrative personnel.
