WHAT: The District of Columbia’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is providing media the opportunity to tour the inside of the District’s Field Disaster Morgue. The Field Disaster Morgue, is a tent structure that allows for continuity of operations during a mass fatality. This is the first time that the District has deployed a field disaster morgue.
The deployment of the morgue is part of the District’s first-ever Mass Fatality Symposium and Full-Scale Exercise. The four day symposium included OCME staff, District first responders and international mass fatality experts. Information provided and lessons learned from other mass fatalities will help inform the District Wide Mass Fatality Management Plan.
The culmination of the symposium is a full-scale exercise that simulated a complex coordinated attack within the District. The exercise commences today with “victims” being transported to the field disaster morgue.
The media will be provided access to the clean autopsy suites to shoot b-roll and ask questions.
